While SMAs (shape memory alloys) have established a significant presence
in microscale self-folding/bending actuators for origami devices due to
their mature fabrication techniques and robust performance, SMPs and
SMPCs (shape memory polymers/composites) demonstrate considerable
potential. Their versatility in material choice and simpler fabrication
methods make them promising candidates for future research and
application in microscale actuators. The ongoing advancements in both
SMA and SMP technologies are likely to expand theirapplicability, paving
the way for more sophisticated and efficient origami-inspired devices.
Future research should focus on overcoming the fabrication challenges
associated with SMAs and exploring the untapped potential of SMPs at the
microscale to fully leverage their capabilities in origami-inspired
micro-actuation.
